All businesses in England and Wales that have public on site or who hold events at a location, must display an NHS Test and Trace QR code unique to that location from 24 September 2020.
The purpose of the NHS app is to alert people when they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 and, if necessary, ask them to self-isolate.
Like the failed first version of the app, it uses Bluetooth technology to work out when other app users are in close enough proximity to risk passing the virus on.
If and when someone begins showing symptoms of the virus, they can share that information on the app, and it will send a notification warning of possible infection to everyone who’s been in close proximity with that person recently.
The app will also make it easier for users to order a test and check symptoms, and it includes a feature that allows QR codes to be scanned for people to ‘check-in’ to public locations, such as pubs or restaurants.

Information you will need before you start
You will need:
- Your email address
- Your business address, place of worship, community organisation or event
If you have more than one venue, you will also need:
- The address of each location
- An email address for the manager (or point of contact) for each location
- A phone number for the manager (or point of contact) for each location
Getting your QR code
You’ll receive your QR code poster by email soon after you have submitted your information. If you have more than one location, the manager (or point of contact) for each location will also receive a unique QR code poster by email.
When you receive your QR code poster you should:
- Print the poster
- Display the poster somewhere visitors can see it and scan it when they arrive, for example next to the entrance
- Ask visitors to scan the QR code when they arrive, using their NHS COVID-19 app
- Display as many posters as you need to, to avoid queues forming
If you do not have a printer, you can show the QR code on a display screen, such as a TV or tablet. Make sure it’s within reach so visitors can scan it with their mobile phones.
As a business you must have another means of recording test and trace information, this must be kept for 3 weeks. This would be for anyone without smartphones or compatible phones.
